4 Hour workshop (11:00—13:00/ 15:00—17:00) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP The workshop will address the role that Arabic lettering can play in bringing an Arab/Middle Eastern look and identity to product design made by and/or for the region. The workshop will show some key case studies of work by several designers from the Khatt Foundation network and will discuss 3D lettering and typographic systems in furniture design, production in different local materials/techniques, and new visual design approaches. These will be used as sources of inspiration to discuss what ideas and strategies can be developed for Qatar based design and designers. Using your initial ‘Arabic’ letters, draw composition in 2D and 3D configurations. Create abstract 3D structures that can stand, lie or hang on other structures. You can also use the same letters repetitively to create patterns that can be applied to surfaces (ie. sides of light fittings, or 3 panel screen, or furniture ...etc).
