LISA MILROY ARTIST TALK 27TH JANUARY 6 PM AT KATARA BUILDING 15 On occasion of Katara Galleries current “Encounter” exhibition, co curated with the Royal Academy in the UK, the Katara Education Department has invited RA artist Lisa Milroy for a residency program at Katara Art Studios. Lisa will be with us from the 27th of January to the 2nd of February based at the Katara Art Studios, from where she will be orienting and guiding Qatari artists wanting to improve their artistic practice and skills. In the spirit of knowledge sharing and exchange between Katara and the Royal Academy, and between Qatar and the UK, we start our Lisa Milroy Residency program with a public talk where the artist will present herself to the Qatari audience and give us an overview of her work and career to date. Join us on the 27th of January from 6 PM at Katara Building 15 for the Artist Talk followed by a Lisa Milroy in Conversation Session with one of the “Encounter” exhibition Curators, Sa’id Costa and Qatari Artists Ibtisam Al Safar and Amal Al Athem, both with artwork featured in the exhibition. The audience will be encouraged to participate in the discussion at the Question and Answers session. Short Artist Bio: Lisa Milroy Lisa Milroy was born in 1959 in Vancouver, Canada, and graduated from Goldsmiths College of Art, London in 1982. Still life is at the heart of Milroy’s practice. In the 1980s, her paintings featured ordinary objects isolated against an off white ground, such as shoes, clothes, books, light bulbs and hardware. In the early 1990s, Milroy’s approach to still life painting shifted, leading to depictions of objects within settings. As the imagery expanded to include landscape, architecture and people, her painting style and exhibition strategies diversified. Milroy’s recent focus is on large scale installation based paintings. Milroy won the John Moores Prize for Painting in 1989 and was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2006. She is the Head of Graduate Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, since 2009. In 2001 her work was the subject of a major survey at Tate Liverpool. Her paintings are held in many private and public collections in the UK and abroad. Milroy lives and works in London.
