Martin Parr is one of the world’s most famous image makers. A photographer since 1970, Parr was encouraged into photography by his grandfather, and joined the international photographic cooperative Magnum Photos in 1994. His innovative approach to photography and distinctive visual style has led to an international success; Parr undertakes commissions, organizes exhibitions, produces books and presents keynote lectures all over the world. March 2013 will mark the second event of a yearlong Magnum Photos collaboration with Katara Cultural Village, where Martin Parr will present an exhibition of selected works. In conjunction with this, Parr will lead a small number of Qatari photographers in a unique three day photography workshop. Participants will shoot on location with Parr, travelling to the typical tourist attractions in Doha often associated with his work. This is a practical, hands on photography experience and Parr will advise students on lighting, composition and the best results for working in the public domain. Participants will have the opportunity to observe Parr in his own ‘natural’ habitat; how he constructs an image, governs his shooting style and engages with his subjects. Each afternoon, the group will re convene at Katara Cultural Village to show, edit and discuss the photographs produced. Students will be supplied critiques from Martin Parr and encouraged into a dialogue about what creates a successful photograph.
