Facilitated by The Prince's School of Traditional Arts In each of these traditional arts workshops, participants will be inspired by the art and architecture of the Islamic world, learning the principles of design behind their beauty. They will then apply these principles in a painted composition of their own making a greeting card, miniature painting, or illuminated design, for example. Participants are welcome to return for multiple workshops; different patterns will be taught in each of the geometry and islimi sessions listed below. Geometry 2 D An introduction to the language of symmetry in Islamic Art. This is a practical workshop looking at how to construct some beautiful classical patterns from across the Islamic world with the traditional tools of compass and ruler. Students will have the opportunity to add colour to their designs and contribute to a group project to be exhibited towards the end of the two week workshop series. Geometry 3 D An introduction to the geometry of structure. In this practical workshop, students will study the relationship between the Platonic Solids and classical Islamic patterns. Students will build both linear and planar models and explore how patterns behave in 3 dimensional space. Family workshop In these practical drop in workshops for all ages, we will explore the integration of floral with geometric motifs to create beautiful patterns in both 2 and 3 dimensions. The techniques introduced will include, geometric drawing, painting, stenciling, tessellation and 3 dimensional model building. Islimi In this practical workshop, students will learn to draw traditional Islimi (floral) motifs free hand. These will then be reflected and tessellated to create a larger rosette which will be integrated with a classical geometric design. Sensitive use of colour and painting technique will be emphasised and students will also have the opportunity to contribute to a group project to be exhibited towards the end of the two week workshop series.
