Geometry workshops (Adults, or age 16 ) Participants will learn to construct Islamic geometric patterns using traditional methods of compasses and straight edge. Several patterns from di¡erent parts of the Islamic world will be taught throughout the week, so participants are invited to return for multiple sessions. Geometry 1: Introduction to Geometric Design – 4 fold patterns Geometry 2: Introduction to Geometric Design – 6 fold patterns Geometry 3: Exploring a range of more complex designs. Open to all, but it is recommended to have completed either or both Geometry 1 & 2 in advance. Students are invited to come to multiple sessions. Illumination workshops (Adults, or 16 ) Participants will explore the art of manuscript illumination, trying their hand at designing islimi elements. There will be more complex project options for those who would like to return for several sessions. Illumination I – Principles of Islimi: Introduction to the language of biomorphic floral design. In this workshop, we will be referring to examples from the Magrebi and Andalusian illumination traditions. Students will learn to apply practical geometry in stylising designs and to recognise rotational and radial symmetries. Finished design samples will then be painted using gouache gold and watercolour on card. Students are invited to come to multiple sessions to continue their work. Illumination II – Introduction to Illuminating Arabic Kufic script: In this practical workshop, participants will to draw free hand floral motifs from examples in the Islamic tradition and to apply these to a piece of to Arabic Kufic script. Students will work through the stages of illuminating their design using gouache gold and watercolour. Family workshops (age 5 , parent to attend with child): Participants will explore the links between geometry and the natural world, and will explore a traditional Islamic pattern using stencils, compasses, and rulers.
