RICHARD DEACON ARTIST TALK 4th FEBRUARY 6 PM AT KATARA BUILDING 15 On occasion of Katara Galleries current “Encounter” exhibition, co curated with the Royal Academy in the UK, the Katara Education Department has invited RA artist Richard Deacon for a residency program at Katara Art Studios. Richard will be with us from the 4th to the 9th of February based at the Katara Art Studios, from where he will be orienting and guiding Qatari artists wanting to improve their artistic practice and skills. In the spirit of knowledge sharing and exchange between Katara and the Royal Academy, and between Qatar and the UK, we start our Richard Deacon Residency program with a public talk where the artist will present himself to the Qatari audience and give us an overview of his work and career to date. Join us on the 4th of February from 6 PM at Katara Building 15 for the Artist Talk followed by a Richard Deacon in Conversation Session with one of the “Encounter” exhibition Curators, Sa’id Costa and Qatari Artists Faraj Daham and Mubarak Al Malik, both with artwork featured in the exhibition. The audience will be encouraged to participate in the discussion at the Question and Answers session. Short Artist Bio: Richard Deacon was born in Bangor, Wales and educated at Plymouth College. He then studied at the Somerset College of Art, Taunton, St Martin's School of Art, London and the Royal College of Art, also in London. He left the Royal College in 1977, and went on to study part time at the Chelsea School of Art. Deacon's first one person show came in 1978 in Brixton. Deacon's work is abstract, but often alludes to anatomical functions. His works are often constructed from a huge variety of different materials, from wood and steel to cloth and plastic, and he calls himself a "fabricator" rather than a "sculptor". His early pieces are typically made up of sleek curved forms, with later works sometimes more bulky. Deacon's body of work includes small scale works suitable for showing in art galleries, as well as much larger pieces shown in sculpture gardens and objects made for specific events, such as dance performances. Deacon won the Turner Prize in 1987 (nominated for his touring show For Those Who Have Eyes) having previously been nominated in 1984. Deacon was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1999 New Year Honours List. In 2007, he represented Wales at the Venice Biennale. He was one of the five artists shortlisted for the Angel of the South project in January 2008.
